Why the update?

The original Infant and Toddler CLASS tools served programs for over 15 years. But learning settings—and educators—have evolved. The 2nd Edition Infant–Toddler product suite, available for delivery on August 1, 2025, reflects current research, field feedback, and the need for greater cohesion across early childhood age groups.

This version combines Infant and Toddler frameworks into one streamlined tool—with one certification process—making it easier and more cost-effective to build and maintain quality interaction practices across your program.

Observer and Trainer Pathways

To ensure reliable, meaningful observation, CLASS 2008 observers must complete the new CLASS 2nd Edition Infant-Toddler Observation Training. There are no transition courses available due to the significant differences in structure and scoring in the 2nd Edition tool. Sign up for Infant-Toddler Observation Training today.

For CLASS-certified trainers and coaches, Add-On Certifications are available for self-study. These make it easy to expand your credentials and bring the updated tool to your program.

FAQ

Why combine Infant and Toddler age groups?

Infants and toddlers have rapidly growing developmental needs, and educators can adopt similar approaches for both age groups to foster meaningful interaction in classrooms. The combined framework allows users to focus on one system, ensuring consistent evaluation across age groups and making it easier to track progress.

Additionally, it is more cost-effective, requiring only a single training program instead of two separate certifications in the CLASS 2008 version.

How will Teachstone prepare observers without experience in the age group to assess the developmental appropriateness of interactions?

The Observer Field Guide contains information on infant-toddler development and indicator-level examples of how infants and toddlers might display a certain behavior. These examples will be discussed in the training and included in training activities and video discussions.
