CLASS® 2nd Edition for Head Start

Same Focus, Greater Reach

For decades, educators have trusted CLASS to improve the quality of interactions that matter the most for children’s development and learning. Now, after conducting a thorough review and hearing input from the field, CLASS is getting even better. Upcoming changes protect the core concepts, keep the focus on interactions, and allow the power of interactions to have greater reach.

A More Equitable Measure of Quality

Over the last several years, we heard that systems like CLASS don’t always represent every educator, every classroom, or every interaction as effectively or equitably as they should. CLASS 2nd Edition is changing that.

CLASS 2nd Edition has intentional enhancements to:

  • Help CLASS users, especially observers, understand how interactions should look and sound different across various contexts.
  • Increase representation and support bias recognition and reduction in CLASS observations.
  • Make definitions of meaningful interactions more equitable, inclusive, and accurate across various cultures, languages, and settings.

An Environment of High-Quality Interactions

CLASS 2nd Edition includes a new measure of quality, CLASS® Environment, that is designed to help educators learn how to best structure and leverage the learning environment to support and increase meaningful interactions.

CLASS® Environment supports educators as they:

  • Create an environment that promotes quality teacher-child interactions.
  • Focus on the key elements of the environment that matter the most.
  • Use the environment to intentionally support children’s learning and development.
Measure for Impact

More Actionable Guidance to Improve Effective Teaching Practices

Enhancements and new updates to CLASS 2nd Edition help ensure the collection and sharing of more specific and actionable guidance to help educators focus and improve on key elements of their practice.

CLASS 2nd Edition offers new enhancements that:

  • Capture the content and setting of learning experiences, as well as the quality and role of the physical learning environment.
  • Formalize scoring at the indicator level to give more specific insights into the specific behaviors and skills that can drive meaningful interactions.
  • Offer access to comprehensive reports for easily sharing insights collected during an observation.
